Coleen’s Story
Coleen was shocked when she found out she had breast cancer. She had always been so fit and healthy and had no symptoms at all except one small lump in her left breast. Now, after a full mastectomy, Coleen was having chemotherapy on a weekly basis. With her husband away a lot with work, and two small boys, Coleen was struggling to keep up with the household chores and look after her boys when her husband was away.
After her mum came back from the GP and told her that Southern Cross Care (Qld) could provide in-home service to everyone, not just the Aged, Coleen phoned to find out what the costs would be to help her manage the day-to-day activities around the home.
She was pleasantly surprised to find that not only were Community Services able to help her straight away, but that the fees and overall cost were within her budget. She was able to get some assistance from the Government and make up the rest from her part-time job.
She is now able to cope much better with the weekly treatments, as on the day she actually has the chemo, a carer arrives from Southern Cross Care (Qld) to prepare dinner for the boys, tidy up the house and enable Coleen to rest and recuperate.
