Moving into a Retirement Village...

SCC_GrahamMichelle.jpgGraham and Michelle had been retired for 5 years and were still living in the family home. The three children had flown the coop and Michelle often felt like she was rattling around inside a big house that just took all her time to clean! Graham spent most of his time in the garden and maintaining the pool, or fixing things around the house as they weathered or needed replacement.

They never seemed to get the time to do all those things they had planned to do in retirement, such as travelling to Asia, or camping across Australia. Besides, so much money was still tied up in the house and went on maintenance bills, they never seemed to have the spare cash to do it anyway.

Then one day, their daughter Jane suggested they look at a retirement village. “At first we felt quite offended” said Michelle “we weren’t ready to be shoved away in a retirement home”.

Jane had visited a friend’s parents in one of the Southern Cross Care (Qld) Estates on the sunshine coast, and she couldn’t say enough good things about it...

“On first visit we fell in love with the atmosphere there. The units were beautiful and very spacious. There is no-one living on top of you and your privacy is protected. Everyone we met on the day seemed so happy living there. We decided to give it a go” said Michelle.

“3 months later, we are settled in and wished we had taken the step sooner” says Graham. “Now we have all the time we want to go travelling, with the peace of mind that our home is secure and looked after. We have plenty of spare cash, and are not spending all our time and money maintaining a large aging property. We get more time to spend with the grandchildren and have made some great new friends locally”.

Graham and Michelle often get involved in the classes and events organised at the community centre. They enjoy a swim in the pool or the odd game of tennis, but most of the time they are off doing all the things they had planned to do together for so long.

Graham is actually quite a few years senior to Michelle and they are pragmatic about the fact that Graham will likely need some assisted care well before Michelle. Even this is catered for with Southern Cross Care (Qld), as an aged care facility is co-located just across from the retirement village.
