International Peace Day – Southern Cross Care

The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. Events are held around the world and Southern Cross Care (Qld) participates by holding events in many of it residencies.

The theme for 2010 is “Peace is not just the absence of war and conflict. Peace is dependent on our goodwill to all humanity”

At Caloundra the morning ceremony was kicked off by a Scottish windpipe player. Aboriginal and Interfaith dignitaries spoke, including:

Ms Beverley Hand - Leader of the Aboriginal Community in Caloundra
Fr Ken Goodger – Anglican Community
Venerable Lhagsam – Buddhist Community
Mr Mike Stewart – Catholic Church
Benjamin Nitchke – Islamic Community
Rabbi John Cooper- Jewish Community
Major Kevin Holland – Salvation Army
Rev Ray Townsend – Uniting Church Community

It was a great display of unity and non-discrimination.

Also attending:

Mrs Lillian van Litsenburg MP
John Dobson, Chancellor of the University of the Sunshine Coast
Virginia Balmain, Qld President of the UN

The local school contributed the most amazing drawings about peace, love and life and these were display all around the walls.

The residents had the most enjoyable morning of entertainment and a beautiful morning tea was laid on for all.
