Maria's Story
Until recently, Maria had managed well living in her own home, especially with in-home visits from her valued Southern Cross Care (Qld) carer Janice. Maria lived alone having lost her husband two years prior, and although her day was often brightened by the visits from Janice, she did often feel lonely.
She also noticed that since her 75th birthday she had become more frail, her memory was starting to deteriorate and she couldn’t remember simple things like which day the rubbish was supposed to go out and when her doctors’ appointments were. She had also started to lose her confidence, not wanting to go out for a walk in case she fell and no-one found her in time.
After a long chat with her daughter Sam and in consultation with Southern Cross Care (Qld), Maria was ready to make the move into an Aged Care facility. She was still worried about losing her independence and not seeing enough of her family, but understood her need for the daily level of care that her daughter Sam and carer Janice just could not provide any longer.
After some research online of those facilities closest to home, Sam took Maria along to visit Southern Cross Care (Qld) at Stretton Gardens. Maria could not believe how beautiful the rooms and general decor were. There was also plenty of space and beautiful grounds where she could continue her cherished daily walks.
3 months later Maria is settled in...
“I really had nothing to worry about, Sam comes to visit with the grand children often, they are welcomed with open arms and the kids really enjoy the visits. I have made some lovely friends here and there is always someone for me to have dinner with and keep me company. When I need my solitude, I don’t feel trapped in a tiny box. My rooms have become my home and I feel a sense of comfort in that there is always someone at hand to help should I need it”.
Sam noticed how her mother had actually started to get stronger since she moved into Stretton Gardens. With the constant care available on hand, Maria’s confidence has returned and her daily walks and fresh air are returning the glow to her cheeks; indeed, even her appetite has picked up.
“The increased social interaction with the other residents has brightened Mum’s outlook on her life” said Sam, “she seems to have more of a purpose on a daily basis, she has even picked up her sewing again”.
As Maria’s needs increase, so will the level of care made available to her at Southern Cross Care Stretton Gardens. Maria will be able to call Stretton Gardens home for as long as possible as Southern Cross Care (Qld) supports the concept of Ageing in Place, and although she may change rooms along the way, she will enjoy a very fulfilling and caring life for the rest of her years.
