Violet’s story
Violet is 79 years old and lives by herself. Her family worry about her but also know it is important to her that she maintains her independence as long as possible. Violet had had 3 falls, all whilst preparing her meals, so her daughter Janet, contacted Southern Cross Care Community Services. Support was offered almost immediately and a carer came out to visit to determine the best course of action, The key was to put preventative measures in place to minimise the risk of falls and give Violet her confidence back.
Problematic carpets and rugs were removed and hand rails placed strategically on steps and near the bath and toilet. A four wheel walker was suggested with a seat that would allow Violet to carry her food and drink from the kitchen to the lounge room. Meals on Wheels were ordered 5 times a week and a carer set up to visit twice a week to initially help with cleaning.
Janet also ordered a pendant alarm that Violet wears around her neck that automatically activates should she fall and not be able to get up.
Violet is much more confident at home now and with that little bit of support, happy to continue living independently in her own home for a long as possible.
