For our Home Care client, Glenys, and a group of like-minded women on the Gold Coast, Monday afternoons are often filled with the gentle rhythm of knitting needles and the sound of laughter, all helping to bring a little dignity and comfort to breast cancer survivors.
It started over a chat about breast cancer and the challenges many women face after a mastectomy. Traditional prostheses, while necessary, can be heavy, costly and uncomfortable. When the idea of Knitted Knockers was raised – soft, lightweight, handmade alternatives designed to fit comfortably in a bra – the group from Halcyon Waters, was instantly inspired to help.
Armed with knitting needles, cotton and compassion, the women quickly got to work. What started as a small project soon gained momentum, with the local craft group also contributing. In just a few months, more than 20 women created more than 700 knitted knockers in various sizes, each one thoughtfully made and packaged in pairs.
These handmade gifts have since been distributed to hospitals and cancer support services across Queensland, including Gold Coast, Brisbane, Mackay and Goondiwindi. Many have also been given directly to women in the Halcyon Waters community and to friends and relatives. Given freely, they provide not just physical comfort, but a renewed sense of confidence for women navigating life after surgery.
The group has also been deeply touched by the response. They’ve received numerous cards and letters filled with heartfelt thanks, from hospital staff and recipients alike, sharing how the knitted knockers have brought comfort, dignity and reassurance during a difficult time.
For Gloria and the group, the project is about far more than knitting. Many of the women share a personal connection to breast cancer, making each stitch an act of empathy and understanding. “Unless you’ve been through it, you don’t always realise the impact,” one member reflected. “If this helps someone feel like themselves again, then it’s worth every minute.”
The group’s unofficial motto, “no quitting, keep knitting”, captures both their humour and their heart.
For Glenys, the weekly gatherings also offer something just as valuable, including connection, laughter and support. Together, these women are not only creating comfort for others, but a strong and caring community for themselves.
