At Southern Cross Care Queensland, we know that the smallest gestures can have the biggest impact. That’s why we’re thrilled to collaborate with Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH), a program that’s been making a heart-warming difference in our aged care homes.
The HPHH program connects residents with rescue animals in need of love, companionship, and care. Through weekly sessions, residents engage with dogs, ducklings and other furry friends, fostering meaningful interactions that brighten their days. For many, these animals evoke cherished memories of past pets and provide an opportunity to reconnect with the joy of caring for another living being.
The biggest hit of the program so far has been Indigo, an adorable 10-week-old puppy brimming with love and cuddles. Indigo has melted hearts everywhere she’s gone, delighting residents and staff alike with her boundless energy and affection. Kelly O’Brien, Lifestyle Team Leader, sums it up beautifully: “You can see the love in their hearts by the expressions on their faces. It’s a priceless activity that provides reminiscence and companionship.”
Leah Kellaway, Head of Program Delivery at HPHH adds: “I just love hearing about all the residents’ pets when they were younger. These animals become a way to connect and open up new conversations.”
Lorna, a resident at Stretton Gardens, shared her excitement: “I was one of the first residents here at Stretton, and I just love it here. The only thing I miss is having a dog. It’s so lovely to have these dogs visit. I just love Charlie here — who’d be cuddled up sleeping on my bed.”
With Happy Paws Happy Hearts, we’re creating moments of connection, love, and joy that leave lasting paw prints on everyone involved.
