Understand the Costs

Before entering permanent residential aged care, you will need to complete a means assessment through the Australian Government to understand if you are eligible for Government assistance with fees and accommodation costs. The following fee information applies to all new residents entering care on or after 1 November 2025.

1. Basic Daily Fee

All residents pay this fee. Think of it as your daily living costs which covers things like meals, cleaning, laundry and utilities.

This fee is set by the Government and the maximum fee is set at 85% of the single basic age pension. This fee increases in March and September each year in line with the age pension.

2. Hotelling Supplement Contribution

People who can afford to will contribute more towards their daily living costs through a Hotelling Supplement Contribution. This will help to further meet the cost of services such as meals, cleaning, laundry and utilities.

This fee is means-tested so the amount you may need to pay will be based on your means assessment and determined by Services Australia. The maximum amount you may pay changes with indexation in March and September each year.

3. Non-Clinical Care Contribution

People who need to pay the maximum Hotelling Supplement Contribution may also need to pay a Non-Clinical Care Contribution. This fee contributes to personal care costs such as bathing, mobility assistance and lifestyle activities.

This fee is means-tested so the amount you may need to pay will be based on your means assessment and determined by Services Australia. The maximum amount you may pay changes with indexation in March and September each year. Daily and lifetime caps apply.

4. Accommodation Costs

The cost of your residential aged care accommodation is set by Southern Cross Care and will vary depending on the room type and location. Think of this fee like your mortgage or rent, providing you with access to your room, bathroom and communal areas.

This fee is means-tested so the amount you pay for accommodation will be based on your means assessment. If you are eligible for assistance, the government will pay some or all of your accommodation costs to us. If not, you will need to pay the price that you agree with us.

You can choose to pay your accommodation cost as either: a lump sum Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) that is refunded when you leave care, less any retention amounts and any fees that you agree to draw down from it; or as a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) that is not refunded when you leave care; or as a combination of both a lump sum (RAD) and a daily payment (DAP).

5. Higher Everyday Living Fee (HELF)

The Higher Everyday Living Fee (HELF) is an optional fee for people who choose to receive higher quality everyday living services in permanent or respite residential aged care. This can include services that are of a higher quality or in addition to those that we must provide.

This is an optional fee that is set by Southern Cross Care and will be discussed and agreed with you after you move in if you would like access to higher services.  For full details, please refer to our Carinya HELF brochure
