Building community through books at Parque Vista

18 October 2024

One resident’s passion for books is helping to uplift the lives of her fellow neighbours at both SCCQ’s Parque Vista Retirement Estate and Duhig Village Aged Care home in Holland Park.

Kay is one of the volunteers who supports the library based at Parque Vista, and believes that books are not just a source of knowledge but a vital means of connection and comfort.

Kay’s journey began long before her time at Parque Vista. With a background in education and a lifelong love for books and libraries, she has helped to create a welcoming space filled with thousands of donated books, jigsaw puzzles, games and music CDs. “It’s amazing to see how residents come together to share their love of reading,” Kay explains.

Parque Vista residents have 24/7 access to the library, a hub where they can borrow anything they like without the constraints of traditional borrowing systems. “You take a book, read it, and return it whenever you’re ready,” Kay says with a smile. This easy-going approach has fostered a sense of community, encouraging conversations and connections among residents.

Kay has noticed how on occasion the library becomes a refuge for those feeling lonely. “When newcomers arrive, they can find the change overwhelming,” she notes. “But in this space, they can engage with others, share stories, and even find helpful resources like cookbooks to learn new skills to support changing life and dietary needs.”

Her favourite genre? Biographies. “Everyone has a story, and I find them truly inspiring,” she shares. With a diverse collection, including large-print books for aged care residents, the library caters to a variety of interests.

For Kay, the library is not just a collection of books; it’s a lifeline. “Access to literature can spark joy, provide comfort, and even help someone through a tough time,” she emphasises. In her eyes, this little library is indeed a sanctuary, fostering connection and community one page at a time.
