We look after people.
We never forget that each and every person in the Southern Cross Care extended family is an amazing individual.
Everyone has a unique history: a rich life of twists and turns, triumphs and setbacks, celebrations and sadness.
We have chosen to pay tribute to those unique lives with an ever-changing montage of their photographic memorabilia, a tapestry of wonderful and diverse memories we can all share. Thank you to all those that have shared their memories with us.
Our Origins
Southern Cross Care is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation registered under the Corporations Act, 2001 (Cth). The Knights of the Southern Cross, an Australia wide organisation of Catholic laymen, founded the organisation, originally called Southern Cross Homes for the Aged Inc.
The Aged Care wing of the Knights of the Southern Cross was originally established in Western Australia in the mid 1960s. Other states followed the lead and the Queensland branch was first formed in Brisbane in 1967.
Southern Cross Care operates autonomously in each state, providing residential and community care services to several thousand elderly and disabled persons throughout Australia. While each is autonomous, there does exist Southern Cross Care Australia, a think tank comprising the Chairpersons and CEO’s of each State. This allows us on an Australia wide basis to share knowledge, experience and expertise.
Queensland opened its first hostel, Archbishop Duhig Court at Holland Park in 1979 and in August 2001 we changed our name to Southern Cross Care (Qld) Inc to reflect our broader role. We now have 5 retirement villages, 11 aged care facilities and operate Community Services across South East Queensland, supporting the aged and the disabled in their own homes.
As you will appreciate all that we have achieved would not have happened without assistance from our many supporters, the Archdiocesan Development Fund, our Southern Cross Care (Qld) members, our fundraisers (Knights of the Southern Cross) and of course our loyal staff.
Pride in our past, Faith in our future.
Southern Cross Care Queensland is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation established by the Knights of the Southern Cross, an Australia wide organisation of Catholic laymen, to meet the growing demand for aged care.
Southern Cross Care was built on the best foundations any organisation can have: the solid rock of guiding principles originally set up by the Knights of the Southern Cross and exemplified in the phrase, Valuing and Respecting Human Life. This is the purest expression of the Catholic values that lie within us all.
Since opening our first hostel, in 1978 there has been a great deal of change in the delivery of Care services to the community. While times have changed, there has been no change in our unwavering commitment to the provision of the highest quality services, and the care, love and respect that we offer to those who choose to come to live with us or use our services.
