On 13 September, we proudly celebrated the graduation of 21 dedicated SCCQ workers from Papua New Guinea, who completed their Certificate III in Individual Support and have now become qualified Aged Care workers.
Since the first cohort of Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme workers arrived on our doorsteps last June, they have filled vital roles in our homes in Allora, Chinchilla, Murgon, and Taroom. They quickly became an invaluable part of our SCCQ family, serving our residents with remarkable dedication while undertaking studies in Certificate III.
The graduation ceremony held at our Support Centre in Brisbane was attended by family members who travelled from Papua New Guinea but also by the PNG Consul General, Reatau Rau, representatives from the PALM scheme, our training partner Akadia, and SCCQ staff.
The event was particularly heartfelt, as all of the workers had left home in search of new opportunities, some even parting with children as young as six months old. Reflecting on their journey, the graduates shared the challenges they faced in adapting to a new life—balancing work, study, and the emotional strain of being far from loved ones. Despite these hardships, they expressed deep gratitude for the support they received from our staff and the opportunities this experience has opened.
Ancy Fimaimba, who works at our Illoura Village home in Chinchilla, shared how her qualifications have paved the way for new possibilities: “The Certificate III has positioned me as a skilled employee in Australia, enabling me to earn more and provide new experiences for my family. It has also inspired our extended family to seek job opportunities abroad.”
Our CEO, Jason Eldering, praised the graduates, saying, “Our PNG workers have brought an incredible sense of joy and family into our homes, creating a loving environment where our residents feel genuinely valued.”
Our PALM staff will continue their wonderful work within our homes for the next four years, and we look forward to seeing them grow as they help us build communities where the best lives are lived.
