The flying nun bringing comfort and care to St Mary’s

23 October 2024

With a heart full of compassion and a life story that spans decades, Sr AnneMaree Jensen, the Pastoral Carer at our St Mary’s Residential Aged Care home, has dedicated her life to serving others.

For over four years, AnnMaree has provided emotional and spiritual support to residents, drawing on her rich experiences as a nun, a former teacher and even a pilot.

For 50 years, AnneMaree has been a dedicated Presentation Sister, beginning her journey as a teacher who inspired young minds in Brisbane. Her career took her to Longreach, Emerald, and the Sunshine Coast, where she made lasting impacts. A twist of fate opened the door to the Aerial Ministry in rural Queensland, leading her to earn her pilot’s license.

Soon dubbed the “Flying Nun,” she soared across the skies in a Cessna 172, visiting remote communities and providing vital spiritual support to those in need in the vast west of Rockhampton and Toowoomba dioceses. In the mid-90s, her remarkable story was captured in a documentary titled “The Flying Nun,” followed by the publication of a book bearing the same name.

Carrying the Olympic torch in 2000 was another highlight of her remarkable journey. Nominated by the Families of the Outback, she cherished the opportunity to represent their resilience and spirit.

Now, at Southern Cross Care St Mary’s in Raceview, AnneMaree finds joy in listening to the life stories of residents. “Each person has a unique history,” she explains. “I get to connect with them on a personal level, sharing moments of joy and sorrow.” Her ability to relate to their experiences fosters a deep sense of community within the aged care home.

Whether she’s reminiscing about the past with residents or providing comfort in difficult times, AnneMaree’s commitment to service shines through. “I’ve learned the value of family and community from those I’ve served, and I strive to bring that same warmth here,” she reflects.

As she continues her vital work, AnneMaree remains a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all of the power of listening and the importance of connection in every stage of life.
