We are honoured to announce that Southern Cross Care Queensland (SCC) has been awarded more than $50 million under the Australian Government’s Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP) to build a brand-new residential aged care community in Broken Hill.
This is the largest grant of its kind in this round of funding, and it represents a historic investment in aged care for the region. Several of our existing facilities, particularly Aruma Lodge, had been reaching the end of their operational life. Jason Eldering, CEO of SCC, said: “Our vision is to grow communities where best lives are lived, and this funding gives us the opportunity to make that vision a reality in Broken Hill.”
More than just a building, this project will provide improved access to quality care close to home, deliver new community facilities, and the ability to deliver modern, safe, and welcoming community spaces for older people.
We are deeply grateful to the Federal Government for entrusting us with this opportunity, and we especially want to thank the many local community groups, leaders, and partners who have worked alongside us to make this possible. Jamie Chaffey MP has provided invaluable advocacy to make this happen and has said, “This funding is a game-changer for Broken Hill. It means our aged residents will have access to quality care and accommodation locally, and it also means jobs for our people. And it means our community is stronger, more connected, and more hopeful. I’m proud to have worked alongside Southern Cross Care in making this possible.”
As planning and design progress, we will continue to listen, collaborate and keep the community updated. This investment is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about dignity, connection, and ensuring older people can remain close to family and community in a place they’ve always called home.
