Southern Cross Care Queensland joins the global Catholic community in celebrating a momentous occasion in the life of the Church—the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost. His appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first American-born pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church.
Pope Leo XIV began his papacy with a message that resonated around the world, greeting the faithful with the words, “Peace be with all of you.” This simple yet powerful blessing underscores his deep commitment to fostering peace, compassion and unity across all communities.
Born in the United States, Pope Leo XIV brings to his papal ministry a rich legacy of service, shaped by decades of missionary work in Peru with the Order of St Augustine. His leadership within the Church—most recently as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops—has been defined by humility, spiritual depth and a profound dedication to those on the margins.
As a Catholic ministry grounded in service and care for the most vulnerable, Southern Cross Care Queensland is inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s life of mission and his call to build a Church of peace and solidarity. We give thanks for this historic moment and offer our prayers for Pope Leo XIV as he takes up his ministry.
May his leadership bring wisdom, courage and renewed hope to the Church and to the world.

Our loving creator God,
You guide us on the path of life and your goodness and presence is our constant companion.
We give you thanks for the work of all the cardinals in the election of Pope Leo XIV.
Fill Pope Leo XIV with the power of your Spirit and be with him in his service of the Church.
Give him the strength, courage, wisdom, and joy that he will need to be a witness to the world of your love and peace.
May he have the compassion of Jesus Christ as he leads the church and reaches out to all people to express your love for the world.
