Deferred commencement of new Aged Care Act.
On 4 June 2025, the Hon Sam Rae MP, Australia’s new Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, announced a delay in the commencement of the new Aged Care Act. Originally set for 1 July 2025, the rollout will now begin on 1 November 2025.
At Southern Cross Care, we wholeheartedly support the reform agenda behind the new Act. This extension recognises the scale and complexity of the changes ahead, providing aged care providers, older Australians, and their families with additional time to prepare with clarity and confidence.
The new Aged Care Act is one of the most significant transformations in decades. It places older people’s rights at the heart of care delivery, introducing a comprehensive Statement of Rights and Principles to guide services.
However, reforms of this size require careful, thoughtful implementation to avoid disruption to the quality and continuity of care that Australians depend on.
We share the sector’s view that these reforms should not be rushed. The delay also allows extra time to finalise and communicate vital details of the Support at Home program, ensuring a smoother transition for community-based care.
