Aged care reform update

With the new Aged Care Act introducing clearer rights and stronger support for older people, the role of the Registered Supporter is one of the helpful changes now available.

This new role is all about strengthening choice and ensuring people feel supported, informed, and heard as they navigate their aged-care journey.

What is a Registered Supporter?
A Registered Supporter is someone an older person trusts (like a family member or friend) who helps them make and communicate decisions about their aged-care.

What does a Registered Supporter actually do?
They help the person understand information, explore care options, and clearly express what they want, including when making complaints or care-related choices. They can also request and receive information about the person’s care (with permission).

Do they make decisions on someone’s behalf?
No. Being a Registered Supporter does not give decision-making authority. The older person keeps the right to make their own decisions.

Does everyone need one?
Not at all. Many people already have informal support that works well for them. Registering someone is completely optional.

How do you become a Registered Supporter?
It’s simple, you can register someone through My Aged Care, whether online, over the phone, or during an aged-care assessment.
