Caring for Our Common Home
At Southern Cross Care, we know that the way we treat people and the world around us truly matters. Caring for one another goes hand in hand with caring for the environment we all share.
From 17–24 May, we join organisations around the world in recognising Laudato Si’ Week as an opportunity to pause, reflect and consider how small, everyday actions can help protect our shared world.
What is Laudato Si’?
Laudato Si’ is the late Pope Francis’ call to care for our common home, drawing together social justice, compassion for those most vulnerable, and respect for the environment. It reminds us that the wellbeing of people and the planet are deeply interconnected and that our choices, both big and small, shape the world we leave behind.
At its heart is a simple but powerful message: everything is connected. When we act with care, responsibility and dignity, we help create a more just and sustainable future for all.
From Hope to Action
This year’s theme for Laudato Si’ Week is “From Hope to Action.” In this spirit, Southern Cross Care is proud to share our inaugural Laudato Si’ Action Plan 2026-2028. The Action Plan outlines practical steps we are taking to:
Our Action Plan builds on important progress already made, including energy-efficient upgrades, solar installations, recycling programs, ethical procurement policies, modern slavery prevention initiatives, staff education and environmental awareness activities. These actions demonstrate a strong foundation from which our Action Plan will guide continued progress over the next three years.
As we mark Laudato Si’ Week, we are grateful for the service, courage and compassion shown by our people every day, and for the role we all play in shaping a more hopeful and sustainable future.
A Prayer Inspired by Laudato Si
Loving Creator God,
You spoke life into the world, and all creation sang in harmony.
We praise and thank you for the gift of life.
We ask for the grace to hear ‘the cry of the earth’ and ‘the cry of the poor’.
Help us realise how fragile our world is and the impact that our neglect of the earth has had on many people.
Fill our hearts with your light and compassion.
Teach us to care for one another and for the Earth,
so that justice, harmony, and kindness may flourish.
Help us to care for our world and to heal what has been broken.
Help us to choose peace over conflict, and unity over division,
so that all creation may live in dignity, peace and joy.
Amen.
