Empowering our staff to support Mental Health

17 January 2026

At Southern Cross Care, we believe that compassionate care starts with supporting our own people. That’s why our Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training has been met with huge enthusiasm across our sites.

SCC’s Workplace Safety Trainer, Rob Lidgett, has led six intensive workshops this year at Broken Hill, our Brisbane Support Centre, and in the Western Downs, equipping 81 staff members with the skills to recognise and respond to mental health challenges.

“MHFA training fits perfectly with our Known and Loved values,” Rob explains. “Every staff member faces challenges at times, and the skills learned in this course help them support each other with kindness and understanding.”

The training has already shown tangible benefits. Staff report feeling more confident to have open conversations about mental health with their peers. Rob notes that stress and burnout can often contribute to unplanned leave, particularly in caring roles. “Staff who’ve been through MHFA feel better equipped to talk about these challenges, which helps both themselves and the team,” he says.

Past participants agreed the course is invaluable. Phoebe Seo, SCC’s Digital Marketing Specialist, shared, “Mental health awareness is growing, but not many know how to recognise the signs and respond appropriately. This workshop gave me the confidence and practical skills to support a family member, friend or colleague who may be struggling.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of the sessions is the safe, welcoming environment that develops quickly. “Within the first hour, staff start sharing their own stories,” Rob says. “Everyone feels relaxed, and the time just flows. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people connect in such a meaningful way.”

Through MHFA workshops, staff are gaining skills that strengthen both workplace culture and the care provided to residents. The training helps create a supportive environment where everyone feels seen, valued and empowered, making our community stronger together.
