When Peiwa Laka made the move from Brisbane to Broken Hill in early 2026, he wasn’t just starting a new job as Personal Carer at St Anne’s Nursing Home, he was taking a bold leap toward his future.
Originally from Papua New Guinea, Peiwa lived in Brisbane for a decade working in retail while studying Community Services. Relocating to the Silver City meant stepping out of his comfort zone, but it gave him the chance to build independence and embrace a rewarding career path.
Peiwa’s journey into the St Anne’s community began during one of the liveliest times of the year, right in the middle of St Patrick’s Day preparations. To help him settle in, he spent time working across the laundry and lifestyle departments before transitioning into his personal carer role.
That thoughtful start paid off immediately. Within weeks, Peiwa became a beloved fixture among residents and staff. Whether he is hosting card games, calling bingo, or chatting with residents who eagerly look out for him each day, he brings a bright, uplifting energy to every room.
“Being a Personal Carer has helped me grow personally and professionally,” he says. “I’ve learned how to provide compassionate, person-led care while building meaningful relationships with residents. It’s given me confidence, improved my communication skills, and taught me to work effectively as part of a team.”
Beyond his work, Peiwa has also embraced regional life by joining the local West Football Club, connecting with locals on the footy field and quickly making Broken Hill feel like home.
With long-term aspirations to become a Registered Nurse, Peiwa’s hands-on experience lays a strong foundation for his future in aged care. His warmth, enthusiasm, and dedication make him a cherished addition to the St Anne’s family, proving that when you bring your heart to your work, home is never far away.
