Improving hearing and vision support in home care

11 October 2024

SCCQ are excited to partner with the University of Queensland (UQ) on a research project aimed at improving the quality of life for older adults receiving home care services at our Stretton Gardens Retirement Estate. This initiative focuses on the critical roles of hearing and vision in maintaining overall well-being, particularly as we age.

Recent studies indicate that one in six Australians experience hearing loss, while one in three may face preventable hearing issues. Additionally, around 30 million Australians live with chronic eye conditions. These sensory impairments not only affect communication and safety but are also linked to cognitive decline and dementia. Understanding and addressing these challenges is essential for enhancing the quality of life among our elderly population.

The project will include comprehensive screenings to assess hearing and vision health in older adults, providing crucial insights into the current state of these senses in our community. Participants will undergo a series of straightforward tests to determine their sensory capabilities, cognitive health, and overall well-being. This data will help create a detailed profile of sensory health in older Australians, allowing for informed health policy decisions and tailored interventions.

Following the screenings, participants who require support will have the opportunity to engage in a personalised Sensory Support Program. This initiative involves trained sensory therapists who will work with individuals over three months, offering guidance on optimising hearing and vision aids, facilitating social engagement, and providing resources for better environmental adaptations.

By joining this innovative research project, participants will not only receive essential health assessments but also contribute to shaping future care strategies for older Australians. Together, we can create a community where everyone enjoys the benefits of improved sensory health, fostering greater social connections and enhancing overall quality of life.
