It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. Pope Francis died peacefully at 7:35 a.m. local time on Easter Monday, at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
With deep sorrow, we join Catholics across Australia and the world in mourning his loss.
A servant leader of profound humility, compassion and courage, Pope Francis will be remembered for his deep care for the poor, his powerful call to protect our common home through Laudato Si’, and his encouragement of unity and shared discernment through synodality.
His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who serve others with dignity and love — including the many people who work in Catholic aged care, health care, social services and educational ministries across the world.
We give thanks for his extraordinary life and leadership, and we pray that he is welcomed into God’s eternal embrace.
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the life and service of Pope Francis. May his legacy of love, compassion, humility, and dedication to the poor and marginalised, and to our environment, continue to inspire us. We ask that You welcome him into Your eternal embrace, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
