As National Volunteer Week shines a spotlight on the millions of Australians who give their time to help others, Southern Cross Care Queensland proudly celebrates the remarkable contributions of our volunteers across all communities.
Among them is Carol Howard, a volunteer at our Southern Cross Care (SCC) Caloundra Residential Aged Care home. Carol’s kindness and commitment have made a lasting impact with the residents at the home. Carol began volunteering two years ago, after regularly visiting a close friend who was a resident at the home. “She passed away, and I missed going to the home”, Carol shared. “So I decided to become a volunteer there.”
Carol, along with other volunteers, hosts a weekly morning tea social, and supports residents however she can, taking them to appointments, out for coffee, or on peaceful walks through the garden. “It’s all about getting them out of their room for a bit,” she says. “I really enjoy the residents’ company. That generation has been through so much, and they just get on with it. They’re a resilient bunch!”
This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, “Connecting Communities,” is brought to life every day through the actions of volunteers like Carol — and so many others who support our services across Queensland. Whether it’s through companionship, transport, or simply lending a listening ear, our volunteers enrich lives and strengthen the fabric of our communities.
