Residents embrace movement for mind and body

16 October 2025

Movement matters at any age. That’s the message behind Move it, a wellness initiative that has been rolled out across our residential aged care homes this year. Led by our dedicated Lifestyle teams, the program is making it easier and more fun for residents to get active together in ways that boost both body and mind.

From gentle stretches to dancing, boxing, balloon tennis and even Nerf gun target shooting, Move it offers something for everyone. Homes have embraced creativity, with kite flying at St Mary’s, parachute games at Murgon and Caloundra, dance therapy at Duhig Village, tai chi at Edens Landing, resistance bands at Allora, plus so much more. Walking groups, chair-based exercise and music-inspired sessions also give residents a variety of ways to keep moving across our homes. Some homes have even welcomed local school children to join in, creating lively intergenerational sessions filled with fun, energy and plenty of smiles.

The benefits of regular movement are well established. It boosts brain health, lifts mood, calms the mind, builds strength and confidence, and brings people together. As Jodi Havill, Head of Residential Aged Care, explains, “Our focus with Move it is to make exercise social, safe and enjoyable. We know that building strength and balance helps to reduce the risk of falls, while the social connections bring so much joy to residents.”

Our Lifestyle teams have been central to bringing the program to life, encouraging participation and tailoring activities so that every resident feels included. Their creativity and enthusiasm have been key to making exercise sessions something residents truly look forward to.

Residents are responding with enthusiasm, and participation has been strong across homes, with many noticing improvements in mobility, mood and confidence. “The engagement has been incredible,” Jodi added. “Our residents are smiling, laughing and really look forward to Move it sessions.”

Whether it’s a walk in the garden, a dance with friends, or a game of indoor bowls, every move counts. And with Move it, residents are proving that at any age, it’s possible to feel better, think better and live better.
