SCCQ prepares to trial innovative oral health software

9 October 2024

Southern Cross Care Qld (SCCQ) is set to launch a groundbreaking trial of an oral health software across some of our aged care homes, developed in partnership with Amelo Dental and Australian Catholic University (ACU).

Supported by a grant from Aged Care Research & Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA), this initiative aims to enhance dental care for residents in aged care settings.

The Amelo Dental software, designed to provide personalised dental care advice, will be trialled at SCCQ’s aged care homes in Caloundra, Nanango, Edens Landing, and Raceview over the coming months. This innovative platform addresses the unique oral health challenges faced by older Australians, particularly the increased risk of dental diseases associated with aging.

Paul Ansell, founder of Amelo Dental, expressed his enthusiasm about reaching this critical stage, “I started this project several years ago, born out of frustration with the baffling range of dental care products. Our goal is to automate the dental risk assessment, education, and product recommendation process for home preventive care.”

The development of the software has benefited from insights provided by leading dental experts, including Leonie Short, who runs Seniors Dental Care Australia, UQ Professor Ian Meyers, and special needs dentist Lydia See. Their contributions have been invaluable in tailoring the software to meet the specific needs of older adults.

Dr. Kieran Flanagan, chief investigator at ACU, emphasised the importance of the trial, “Southern Cross Care Qld has been really welcoming and eager to participate. We aim to record the effects of the new Amelo protocol and its supporting content, products and care plans over existing protocols.”

As the trial approaches, residents can look forward to receiving more personalised and effective oral health care, and gain the tools and knowledge necessary for better oral hygiene practices, ultimately enhancing their quality of life and their wellbeing.
