Every Wednesday morning at Sunnybank, the sound of music, laughter, and friendship fills the air as the Vintage Voices Community Choir gathers. While the choir is open to those aged 65 and over, many of its devoted members are well into their 90s, travelling from across Brisbane and beyond to take part.
Thanks to Social Support funding through the Government’s Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), and with support from Southern Cross Care as their Home Care provider, the group is able to continue its much-loved weekly rehearsals. Held at a welcoming, accessible venue, rehearsals are led by professional choir conductor Dr Debra Shearer-Dirié and accompanied by internationally renowned pianist John Woods.
Formed in 2010, Vintage Voices was created to bring older people together through the joy of singing, with no auditions or experience required. Fifteen years on, it remains a thriving community.
“This choir isn’t just about music,” says conductor Debra. “It’s about people walking out after rehearsals standing taller, looking happier, and feeling more confident in themselves.”
Performances are a highlight, with the choir taking to the stage at retirement villages, St John’s Cathedral, and even Brisbane City Hall.
Behind the scenes, dedicated volunteers and staff keep everything running smoothly. For Home Care Intake & Admin Officer Nicki Anderson, the group is more than just a choir: “It’s a family. Every member leaves with a smile, and you can’t ask for more than that.”
For the Vintage Voices, music is medicine, community is family, and every song sung is a reminder that life at any age can be filled with harmony.
